Google+ Hits 50 Million Users And Growing 4% Per Day

Google Plus YouIt’s quite remarkable how competitive the Social Media industry is, with all the major players trying to out-do each other.  If you’ve been watching the news lately you would have heard all about the major upgrade coming to Facebook soon called “Timeline”.  Twitter is as strong as ever and Social Sharing apps such as Foursquare and Getglue just keep getting stronger.

But all of this, with maybe the exception of the Facebook news pales in comparison to the latest figures coming out of Google+.  According to self-confessed Google Stats guru, Paul Allen, Google+ recently hit 50 Million users… in just over 80 days!  To put this in perspective, Facebook took more than 1000 days to reach that same milestone.

In his recent blog post, Paul Allen suggest that Google+ could be gaining as many as 2 million users per day!

Josh Wolford mentioned Mr Allen’s methodology in a recent article where he explains it as:

“Allen’s methodology involves using U.S. census data to track certain rare surnames across Google+. He uses that data and extrapolates it across the world to produce an estimation on total user population. Previously, Allen said when Google+ would be hitting the 10 million and 20 million marks, and was pretty much correct.” (source)

The 2 points that Paul Allen highlights are that Google+ has picked up 50 Million Users while still flying relatively under the radar, and more importantly, that it could be gaining at a rate of approximately 4% (2 million new users) per day!

As he also points out in his article, it’s nearly impossible to imagine Google+ not hitting the Billion user mark before too long simply because of the reach they have.

“By integrating +1 and Circles (targeted sharing) and other Google+ functionality into its Chrome browser, Android phones (and tablets), Gmail, Google Reader, Blogger, Google Photos, and other properties, Google+ will give its more than one billion users repeated chances to sign up for and use the functionality of Google+. Like the Chrome commercials say, “the web is what you make of it.” And with Google+, you can make so much more of it that ever before.” (source)

Between Facebook’s new Timeline and the explosion of Google+, are we seeing the emergence of true Social Media / Social Networking super-powers?

Just What IS Google+? Social Media? The New Facebook?

Googgle+If you’ve not yet heard of Google+ you must be living underneath a rock. It’s been touted as the new Facebook, the latest trend in Social Media and the best thing since sliced

But, as many are still asking, what exactly IS Google+?

Google+ is sheer brilliance. Google are not competing with Facebook, and they’re not going up against Twitter. In fact they’re not even going to try and grab a marketshare of that side of Social Media. What Google have done is found unmarked territory in the Social scene and filled it with the truly first all-in-one cloud system.

As you can see, it’s far more than just a button Google+ Button

Impressed? You should be, because Google+ is, as i have already said, sheer brilliance!

5 Essentials To Building A Successful Online Identity

Whether you’re a business owner looking for new customers or someone simply looking for your own small place online, getting, and having an identity is much easier than you may think.

Here are 5 essentials that you will need if you wish to develop or enhance your identity.

1. A Domain Name That Represents You

If you are serious about getting our own piece of the web, your first stop should always be to secure a domain name.

These days you can get domains incrediby cheap, although I would suggest being picky who you get one from. All of my domains are purchased through the same company I host with, Allynne. There prices are incredibly competitive and less than $10 a year will secure you your own website name. IGS also offer domains for a good price. More on them below.

As for what to get, there really aren’t any hard and fast rules about domain names anymore. I would suggest a .com domain though, and choose words that are directly relevant to your website. For example if you wanted a website about coffee, using words like coffee, brewing, grinding, etc in the domain can always help. See point 4 below for more information.

Feel free to contact me if you require help selecting a quality domain name.

2. Hosting For Your Domain

Allynne Hosting and DomainsOnce you have a domain name you need to host it. Hosting refers to the actual storage location for the files you would use for your website. Hosting can be found very cheap these days, however I would strongly warn against seemingly great bargains as they often end up being terrible quality. As mentioned above, i host all my websites with Allynne, and have never had an issue in my 6+ years with them. Hosting will cost less than $10 a month for unlimited space, bandwidth, databases etc, and it does come with great support if you ever need assistance. As with domains, IGS are also an option.

3. A Way To Deliver Content

So you have a domain name and you’ve got hosting. How you need a way to get information from your mind to your potential readers. While static websites are still used, a much better quality way to deliver content is by using content deliver scripts. There are countless options in this area depending on what you need.

WordPress offeres the worlds #1 blogging script and is incredibly easy to use for regular journal / blog type updates. For a more complex system that can be used as both blog or full featured site, I recommend Joomla, the worlds #1 Content Management System (CMS). I use Joomla for this website and WordPress for my hockey website, LizardInsider.

igsIf you wanted a membership type site for business reasons there are many options also, however I would strongly recommend taking a look at the Instant Guru Script (IGS). This is a full featured membership website system that is still in development, but only weeks away. IGS promises to the #1 membership / affiliate website script on the market. I work closely with the developer and have seen this script i action, and to put it bluntly, it’s damn incredible!

Purple Paw Web Design can help with any design and build needs if you’re not comfortable with building your own website.

4. Branding Who and What You Are

Branding yourself the the quintissential, #1, best way to ensure you build an successful identity. Branding is often seen as something that only multi-national corporations can do, but this is not true. Sure, Nike has “just do it”, and McDonalds has “I’m loving it”, but there is nothing stopping YOU from branding yourself.

What are you involved in? What is your website about? Branding doesn’t have to be about slogans, it can be your name, a symbol, or anything you wish. The key to branding however is to choose your keywords carefully and make sure you use them strategically in your content. Over the past year I have been branding my site with the phrases “PPM Guides” and “Powerplay Manager Articles”, and have found an increasing number of hits coming from search engines from those particular search phrases.

If you have a brand in mind, try and incorporate that into your domain name. Be wary of course of things like copyright etc when doing this.

5. Enhance Your Brand Via Social Media

social-mediaThe last step is an ongoing process that involves taking your branded website and populating it across the social media universe. You should have Facebook, Twitter, DIGG, etc accounts and you should make a point to publish your content on those websites. If you are building a business brand, be sure to create new accounts specifically for your business, including a Facebook Page.

Social Media drives the world right now and you want to ensure you are tapping into that very successful market.

These 5 steps are of course just a start, and there are so many more things you can do to help build or enhance your identity online. If you’re not yet in control of your own piece of the web, get involved today!

The Torch Dreams Extinguished: Making The Jump To iPhone4

As many of you know from my earlier post on this issue, I have always been a fan of the Blackberry smartphones. My current phone, an older Blackberry Bold 9000 is up for contract renewal soon so i’m naturally going to need to upgrade my phone to a newer model.

Apple iPhone Version 4I was going to get the new Blackberry Torch 9800 – the latest smartphone from RIM. The Torch is a smooth looking full touchscreen phone with a slider that gives access to the full qwerty keyboard that Blackberry users have come to love. Notice I said “was”.

I have been doing some pretty intense research into the Torch and the other option I am looking at; the Apple iPhone4 and much to my own shock… the iPhone has stolen my heart, converted my soul and robbed me of all interest in the Torch.

Trust me… this is something I thought would NEVER happen.

So I guess you’re wondering what the iPhone did that is so amazing to get me to want to swap? In truth, it wasn’t the iPhone that did it, but rather the time I spent using the Torch at a Telstra store the other day. The Torch looks awesome and has great features, but it doesn’t have the polished finish of the iPhone. The chip that runs the phone is slower than the iPhone and the OS isn’t as smooth and seamless. The iPhone4 absolutely wreaks of a company that has experience and history driving it’s design team. It’s a well crafted phone with all the features you want and need. Oh, and it’s packed in a system run by a faster processor.

RIM Blackberry Torch 9800

Battery life between the 2 is said to be very similar, although from my own research I have found most people find the iPhone4 has MUCH better battery life. Social Networking and Media is designed into the new Torch and it has the incredible universal search, but Apple again, have experience. We all know Apple mastered the MP3 technology a long time back with the iPod, so you know the media technology in the iPhone will be exceptional. Social Networking apps on the iPhone are as good as or better than what the Torch offer.

The Blackberry Torch 9800 does have two things the iPhone can not compete with. First is the unlimited internet via the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS). Truly unlimited data when using the BIS browser and most apps, and of course the Blackberry Messenger is second to none on communications between RIM users. The second thing is the the “push” technology that RIM uses to deliver the email system on the Blackberry.

Unfortunately, while the BIS and Push technology are HUGE reasons I love my Bold 9000, when forced to choose between the 2, my heart takes a giant leap towards the smoother designed Apple iPhone 4.

Why Facebook Is Essential To Your Business

Use Facebook To Increase SalesWhether you run an offline business, own your own online store or simply sell products on the Internet, Social Media networks like Facebook are essential if you wish for your business to succeed.

There was a time when Social Media networks were optional for business owners. Unfortunately, traditional marketing and sales methods don’t work well online where the largest market of potential clients are, so alternative strategies are required.

This is where Social Media sites step in; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, Myspace to name just a few.

You can have the worlds best website with the best quality content possible, but if you don’t get people looking at it, the website is ineffective and costing you valuable time and money.

How Do I Get Traffic?

Facebook is one of the premier sources for high quality traffic and targeted niche markets. What you need to do is set up a Facebook Page for your business and/or Product. This page is not used to “sell” your product, but instead to gather leads, or “Fans” as Facebook refer to them. You would then use Facebook to offer information and updates to your leads. This step alone will lead to extra traffic to your website. But don’t stop there. You should also do the same for Twitter and other main Social Media networks, all designed to do the same thing.

Why do all this?

Simply put, we live in an era where “Social” is the key word. People use the Internet to interact and community with others, to find friends, network and gather information. There is a seemingly endless list of leads on the Internet for your business but to really tap into them you need to ensure your business is in the right place to do so.

The more traffic you have, usually, the more you will make…”.

What are the top 5 website traffic sources?

  1. SEO and the Search Engines
  2. Article Marketing
