Social Media Marketing: Plan – Organize – Execute

Social Media MarketingSocial Media is one of the most successful methods used by marketers right now. Whether it be through the highly targeted ad networks that services such as Facebook offer, or through aggregator sites such as DIGG or Del.icio.us, Social Media simply works.

If it’s so good, why then do so many struggle to find the success others do?

As with any thing you do in life, Social Media Marketing requires effort and a bit of smarts. The fact is, without the following 3 things, your marketing efforts will always be destined to fail.

1. Create A Plan & Set Goals

Business goals are an essential. Do you want to sell a product? Great, what is your target? Want to increase your traffic? What is the figure you want to achieve? You must set goals for all your Social Marketing needs. Don’t rush them either, instead take your time to carefully develop a plan that you know will work. It must be achievable, workable and most importantly, realistic.

2. Organize Yourself To Make The Plan Work

Once you have a plan, you need to start working on how best to get it working. A bit of structure goes a long way in life, so ensure that your daily routine includes everything you need to make your plan work. Set time aside for certain Social Media tasks, even the most mundane of them.

3. Execute The Plan With An Open Mind

Social Media Marketing can be incredibly successful, but it can also be fickle at times. While you may have a plan and a great routine, you must keep an open mind and be prepared to tweak your system as time goes on. Be confident in the knowledge that you have a well developed and structured marketing plan as per steps 1 and 2, however be prepared to put in a lot of effort to reach that success.

Plan, Organize & Execute.

Five Optimizations Your Website Needs

There was a time when having a website gave you a distinct advantage over your competition. Not anymore. Now that Websites are affordable, more and more people are getting them, which naturally is increasing the competition for you and your space on the web.

So the question is no longer, “should you get a Website”, but rather “What can you do to ensure you are ahead of your competition?”.

Here are 5 optimizations that will greatly help improve your Website.

Add Alt Tags To Images

Alt tags add a name or title to images on your website. When you hold your mouse over an image the tag is displayed. These tags are important for 3 reasons. The first is that they allow visitors to your website to view a title of an image of your choosing by hovering their mouse as mentioned above. The second reason is that your image alt names are displayed if the images are not. This means that if a visitor has images turned off they will still see the alt name. The last reason is purely for SEO purposes as alt tags mean search engines such as Google can better clasify your Websites images and therefore view your site in a much better light.

To implement them, simply add the alt=”image name” in your code. ie. <img src=”Image Location” alt=”image alt tag”>

Use H1 and H2 Tags

H1 tags a type of HTML tag that displays your site content in a larger “heading” style. They are part of a group consisting of H1 (largest) through H6 (smallest). The point of these tags is 2-fold in that they not only allow you quick and easy formatting of your site content, but they tell the search engines which content on your site is a heading and therefore worthy of more weighting when it comes to importance.

As web browsers automatically recognise these tags and display accordingly, Use of them also removes the need to individually govern the font size and weight of your content.

To use, simply put your chosen content between the appropriate tags, ie. <h1>content</h1>, <h2>content</h2>, and so on.

Ensure Good Meta Content

Meta tags have been around for a long time and are not considered as important now as they once used to be. That isn’t to say they are not needed. In fact in my opinion they are as important now as they ever were. They are found at the top of your code between the <head> and </head> tags.

While there are quite a few different meta tags available, there are two which I suggest you always use. They are keywords and description.

Use of them is as follows:

<meta name=”keywords” content=”keywords, separated, by, keywords” />
<meta name=”description” content=”a description of your site or page content” />

Keywords, Keywords, Keywords

Regardless of how much you may want it, you are never going to dominate every keyword phrase for your website. By over-extending your keyword usage you are in fact damaging your Websites potential. To remedy this, choose a few carefully selected phrases that you want to be associated with your Website and target your site content around those phrases. Include them in your H1 tags, your meta tags and on your site content, inluding the alt tags of your images.

Dump HTML for CSS Styling

Please, whatever you do don’t use old HTML formatting for content. Taking the time to learn CSS will save you a LOT of time in the future. CSS or Custom Style Sheets allow you to style your content much faster and much for efficiently than with HTML, and will cut down the load time of your page dramatically, therefore improving visitor satisfaction.

What Is A Sitemap And Why Is It Good For SEO?

A sitemap, also know as a site map, is a dedicated web page within a web site that lists all of the pages that make up the web site. It is used as an easily navigable arrangement of links which can take you to the exact page you are interested in finding. This can be a handy shortcut to finding a particular web page within a larger web site. Locating and viewing the sitemap is also a good way to save time when you have an exact idea of what page you are looking for.

Although the sitemap is a wonderful tool for navigation it also serves a dual purpose. Search engines tend to give more weight in rankings to web sites which poses a properly formatted sitemap. This is good information because it will help you to optimize your web site for the search engines, which can only mean more traffic to your site.

A site map which is used for navigation should be designed with humans in mind, not search engines. This means you should focus on a logical layout of the links which make up the sitemap. One of the best design approaches is to list the pages alphabetically in columns from left to right. This will make it easiest for your visitors to locate the page link they are looking for.

Typical file extensions for the sitemap designed for human visitors are.html,.htm or.php. It is a good idea to place a link to the sitemap on every single page within your web site. Usually the link to the sitemap will be found in the footer, or occasionally the header of a page. This is both convenient and conservative of the valuable sidebar and content space on your pages.

As for the sitemap which is created for the search engine spiders, it should be placed in the root directory of your web server. For example you would have your protocol, dot, your domain name, dot, your Top Level Domain, slash, sitemap. The file extension you want to use is.xml.

The.xml sitemap will essentially tell the search engine spiders that your site has a handy list of all of its pages, and where those pages are located. Along with the list of pages is metadata information which tells the search engine about how often the page is updated and how important it is within the site in general.

Search engines usually discover your web site pages based on the informative instructions within your sitemap, and then follow the links from them. As you can see, the sitemap is very important when it comes to getting your site indexed and kept up to date with the search engines.
